Immense damage was caused by the Tornado outbreak of 2011, but something that was much overlooked was the psychological damage caused to the victims of this tragedy. PTSD and Depression was found among the men and women effected by this outbreak. According to the article "Prevalence and predictors of PTSD and depression among adolescent victims of the Spring 2011 tornado outbreak" 7.5 percent of people from a random group met the standard for depression that were involved with the tornadoes. 6 percent of people specification for PTSD this shows that the Tornado's can leave and ever lasting effect on citizens even after the trouble is over. This sample group was interviewed over the phone and used the Dsm-V to check over their behavior to prove the symptoms of these mental diseases.. Not to mention all the heart break caused by the death and injury's of loved ones can leave the victims in a state of despair for long amounts of time.. Another important aspect that was cited is substance usage after events to help cope. the article "Comorbidity of PTSD, Major Depression, and Substance Use Disorder Among Adolescent Victims of the Spring 2011 Tornadoes in Alabama and Joplin, Missouri" displays a higher risk for substance use for adolescents after a traumatic event. They used the tornado outbreak victims as an example and to get data from to prove their cause. Lastly It was found that Females were more likely to get PTSD, depressive episodes, and increased substance usage after the tornado outbreak. This makes the claim that after a disaster strikes that does not mean the problems are over. The 2011 Tornado Outbreak caused a vast array of problems for the Country, people, and their minds. It also shows that the psychological effects on the victims should not be overlooked.
